How To Change Your Modem
Initialization String

Note: The following  instructions are designed for Dial-Up Networking Version 1.2.  If you have an older version of Dial-Up Networking, these instructions may still be used for some guidance in checking your settings.

1.  From the desktop, slide your mouse pointer over the "My Computer" icon and double-click with the left mouse button (the "My Computer" window will appear).

2.  Slide your mouse pointer over the "Dial-Up Networking" icon (inside the "My Computer" window) and double-click with the left mouse button. The "Dial-Up Networking" window will appear.  If you do not have a "Dial-Up Networking" icon available, please refer to section 3.21a of the Internet Texoma How To Directory.

3.  Slide your mouse pointer over the connection you wish to verify, (it may say Internet Texoma in the name) and single-click with the right mouse button. A drop-down menu will appear.

4.  Slide your mouse pointer over the word "Properties" (the last entry) and single-click with the left mouse button. The "Properties" window will appear for that connection.

5.  At the top of the window you will see three tabs: "General", "Server Types", and "Scripting". At the bottom of the window you will see two buttons: "OK" and "Cancel".  Slide your mouse pointer over the "Configure..." button (above "OK" and "Cancel") and single-click with the left mouse button. Your modem's "Properties" window will appear.

6.  At the top of the window you will see three tabs: "General", "Connection", and "Options". Slide your mouse pointer over the "Connection" tab and single-click with the left mouse button. The "Connection" tab will move to the front.

7.  You will see four buttons at the bottom of the window: "Port Settings...", "Advanced...", "OK" and "Cancel".  Slide your mouse pointer over the "Advanced..." button (above "OK" and "Cancel") and single-click with the left mouse button. The "Advanced Connection Settings" window will appear.

8.  Slide your mouse pointer over the "Extra settings" entry box (the white area below the words "Extra settings")  and single-click with the left mouse button.

9.  Type in the modem initialization string you wish to use. When this line is blank, the modem uses the default initialization string. Note: Modem initialization strings are normally entered in either all upper case or all lower case.  Never mix case with a initialization string.

10.  Slide your mouse pointer over the "OK" button and single-click with the left mouse button. The "Advanced Connection Settings" window will disappear.

11.  Slide your mouse pointer over the "OK" button and single-click with the left mouse button. Your modem's "Properties" window will disappear.

12.  Slide your mouse pointer over the "OK" button and single-click with the left mouse button. The "Properties" window for that connection will disappear.

13.  Close the "Dial-Up Networking" window.

14.  Close the "My Computer" window.

15.  Your modem's initialization string has been changed.
